چکیده

Detection of runways in aerial images is part of a project to automatically map complex cultural areas such as a major commercial airport complex. This task is much more difficult than appears at first. Runways are not merely homogeneous strips in the image due to several markings on the surface, changes in the surface material and presence of other objects such as taxiways and aircraft. We use some generic sources of knowledge to help with these problems in a hypothesize and test paradigm. Hypotheses are formed by looking for instances of long rectangular shapes, possibly interrupted by other long rectangles. Runway markings, mandated by standards for runway construction, are used to verify our hypotheses. Our system gives good performance on a variety of complex scenes and does not rely on location specific knowledge. Q 1990 Academic press, hc.

Using Generic Knowledge in Analysis of Aerial Scenes: A Case Study

Our goal is to produce high-quality symbolic descriptions from aerial scenes. We have chosen to work in the domain of large commercial airport complexes. Such scenes have a variety of features such as the transportation network, building structures, and mobile objects. This paper concentrates on detection and description of the transportation network (runways and taxiways). We illustrate the co...

Airport operations safety assessment with the use of colored Petri nets

Numerous operations connected with beginning and ending of air transportation process are executed at the airport. Each of these may be important for the safety of air traffic. However, due to the severity, the most important are taking off and landing operations carried out on runways. In many airports, there exists a system of two intersecting runways. In this case, usually one of the runways...

Statistical Models of Runway Incursions Based on Runway Intersections and Taxiways

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the number of runway incursions are rising. The configuration of runways and taxiways at airports has been identified by the FAA as possibly being related to the number of incursions. In this paper, the relationship between airport geometry factors and the number of runway incursions at specific United States airports is explored using sta...

Runway Schedule Determination by Simulation Optimization

Many airport runway expansion projects are restricted by space limitations imposed by development in the vicinity of the airport. This often causes planners to choose configurations for new runways that limit the use of these runways in time and/or space. Studies that model airports with new runways that are not yet operational need to develop plausible operational models for these new runways ...
